Sounds to me like a vacuum diaphram problem - openning the throttle is causing a huge surge of gasoline to sloosh into the carb - and effectively flooding the engine.
Especially when idling - the motor is responding by beltching black smoke, likely backfiring and flooding itself to the point of stalling when this wave of gas hits the combustion chamber.
I would look closely at the diaphram and the vacuum lines to and from the tank
Does the problem continue when the fuel petcock is in the prime position?
